P!G TH!NG // starch wreck

greetings, friendsssss.my friend brendan carn is on residency at the arteles creative center in hameenkyrö, finland, the same place i was at last february. the countryside looks very different now. one of the projects he's engineered is P!G TH!NG. it is described on the facebook event as follows:'P!G TH!NG is a performative, interactive, musical, ritualistic, eating event. We will be cooking a 70 Kilo (154lbs) pig in an underground oven. The cooking process will take upwards of sixteen hours, during which there will be improvised solo contrabass music every hour on the hour, installations from sound artists from Los Angeles, New York, Baltimore, and Santa Fe, and a short concert of music written by Brendan Carn and performed by the Arteles residents. There will also be a live webcast of the P!G TH!NG as well as open studios showcasing all of the fantastic visual art being produced at Arteles. Admission will cost 5 euros, which will include profound amounts of delicious slow-cooked pork, vegetarian options, side dishes, and traditional Finnish home-brewed alcohol.'i am one of the sound artists from los angeles. brendan told me about the project and asked me to participate by writing a piece that was somehow connected to the event/process as he described it. three weeks later, 'starch wreck' was born. 'starch wreck' is a through-composed piece with no improvisation (as such) that alternately repeats related musical events and quiet noise for about a minute each. 'cool, whatever, heard it before' you say? okay. here's the thing: the sheet music will be buried with the pig for the 16 hour cooking process!!! if there's any sheet music left to play--and there may not be--it will be marred by dirt, darkened by smoke, and soaked in oils, thus obscuring the notes. the pig's revision of the piece will then be played by any number of people on any instruments. i'm excited. and i was promised pictures, in lieu of actual pig.stay tuned!
