so far
in hopes that my article in this months modern drummer magazine will bring new people to this wholly unsacred place, i'm pretty shamelessly summing up what's happened to this point.
i've made two free internet based series' of music. first was the 'pickled ginger' series--13 10-second-or-less pieces as a palette cleanser. second, the 'other drum solos' series, ten short videos where i do what i think are fun, interesting things with a drum set. there is a second season of the latter in the works.
there's some sheet music for my compositions for the band chord four, gig announcements, gear specs, etc.
and then there's the ramblings category. in it, we've covered such disparate topics as:
the ubiquity of rhythm, harry houdini, language-based key signatures, cooking a whole pig, paul motian and mondrian, lady gaga as cheesburger, the waste of time that is a clock, free music, what sour sounds like, sushi as a musical love, and weiner.
it's interesting to notice my patterns in writing these. it's a lot the same as noticing them in my playing. not just conscious musical or linguistic devices i like that may or may not constitute a 'voice,' but things i'm not aware of. at the moment musically, i'm working on really using the hi-hat played with my foot as a voice in the counter-point or groove, not just as a quick space filler between legerdemain. it's definitely the unsung hero of the drumset. here, in words, i mention my dad a fair amount, and i noticed a lot of my pieces have grown out of conversations with friends. i also indulge my love of food and magic as related to music, but it's my goddamn blog, so there.
thanks for stopping by. here's me making the same face in three very different playing situations:
