a very important post
some of what i've been up to, in reverse chronological order:
two nights ago, during a pleasantly boozy outing with my friend the guitarist max kutner, our conversation stumbled--but not slurred--into my interest in the overlap of food and music. we somehow fell into the rabbit hole of trying to find analogues in hearing for the five basic tastes, scribbling on the back of a paper bag i somehow had in my coat pocket. when i got home, i continued this, trying to flesh out the relationships of all five senses in that way. it was an interesting way to think about my senses, but one taste had me stumped: sour. i gave up on smell completely, there are so many specific smell receptors, but sour had something i wanted. i couldn't (can't) really figure out what a sour sound, sour sight, or sour touch would be, what it would convey, or why it would be there in the first place. as it turns out, sour is the taste receptor that science has had the hardest time justifying evolutionarily. aside from the general brain exercise, i now have a specific thought to chew on: what does sour mean? tell me your thoughts.
a week or so ago, it absolutely poured with rain. all of a sudden, it was autumn. i've been playing with the idea of rain chimes for a while, and i'll get around to making proper ones. i didn't want to let the rain go to waste, so i did this:
it was a very small sound in the presence of that much rain, but it was really nice. and i recorded it, to show people if it sounded good. except that my recorder died, unbeknownst to me until after i'd pulled the cymbals in and it had stopped raining so hard. i'll just have to wait for my grammy.
that same rainy day, i made this:[soundcloud url="http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/63943914" params="show_comments=true&auto_play=false&color=0086ff" width="100%" height="81" iframe="false" /]
sometime in the not too distant past, it was confirmed that a rhythm exercise of mine would be published in modern drummer magazine. that issue will come out in mid-november. hooray.
around the same sometime, i was offered a solo drumset show at the hammer museum through wildup, as a part of their residency at the museum. the show will be november 30, and i haven't yet figured out what to do. i'll get there. double hooray.
also, i'm playing drums, percussion, melodica, and my voice on the first trio record by toh kay, the acoustic project of streetlight manifesto singer tomas kalnoky. pretty awesome.
lastly, there's miscellaneous gigs with the anthropic ensemble, the sogo takeover, singer-songwriters, subbing in musicals, teaching, etc. (today, i lectured on the dangers of stank-face) couple shows coming up i'll try to let you know about.
it reads like i'm really busy. that's weird. making everything but love and money.
