kicked in the starter

hi folks,

yesterday around supper time, while playing cribbage and cooking pasta, my kickstarter campaign ended and i had not met my funding goal. so firstly, if you donated, your cards will not be charged. secondly and most importantly, thank you so much for your generosity. i received support from old friends, kind strangers, and friends of friends of friends alike. while it's a bit embarrassing to come up short on a gamble of this kind, there was an exciting surge of backers towards the end.

i'm working out the free download of the wee ep for you who donated, and will have that out in mid-september, i believe.

i'd like to address two issues i was confronted with repeatedly during the course of my project on kickstarter.

there are those who think anyone who uses kickstarter is a beggar, and there are those kickstarter users who want backers to bankroll their entire project including puiblicity, not simply what they need, as the kickstarter guidelines request. the former is false on two points: 1) the reward system alone renders the begging...not begging. in a good and scrupulous project, you pre-order the product like you would a book or videogame, and indeed money from that donation would be used in mailing the product. 2) across the globe the cultural predecessor to kickstarter was patronage--you are good at this thing, i will support you in doing it. to the latter, i do not donate to projects by well-established people or groups asking many thousands of dollars, with over-inflated reward structures. i hope my project did not come across as any of those things. except maybe well-established; that'd be cool.

that said, i am very glad for the experience, and have actually made a few good connections. the project will go on, albeit at a slower pace than projected. i won't be using a platform like kickstarter again, but i will be posting updates from time to time here, if you'd like to continue playing along. if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or good videos of close-up magic, please get in touch at me@colinwoodfordmusic.com. once again, thank you very kindly to those of you who lent a hand.

yours in sound, colin (read my earlier post about kickstarter here.)
